How to Heat your SteakStones Lava Stone?
In a domestic setting by far the easiest and most effective way to heat your SteakStones Lava Stones is by placing the stone under your grill, as close to the element as possible. The direct heat will quickly penetrate the stone and you will be up to full temperature in around 30mins – 40 to be sure. This is the ideal method for our larger sharing stones or several of our smaller individual stones.
You can also heat the stones on the hob, gas or electric, and this method can be quicker (depending on distance from flame to hob etc), taking just 20-30mins to absorb the heat. This works well for our smaller individual stones which will fit nicely on each hob space.
You can also use the Oven, although the majority of UK Ovens won’t heat to a high enough temperature (300c plus) and no matter how long you leave the stones in the Oven they won’t get any hotter than the maximum temperature shown. This is different to the hob element which will reach circa 500c and heat your stones placed underneath to 330-350c, the perfect temperature to enjoy this fantastic experience.
You may choose to use your SteakStones Lava Stones in place of or in addition to your barbecue. It is difficult for us to say how long they will take to heat on a barbecue grill, but at full heat this will be along the lines of the grill heating option above.
To test the heat of the stone (if you don’t have a laser thermometer which we sell) you should simply pour a teaspoon of water onto the heated stone and if it is ready to cook on the water will instantly sizzle and evaporate on or before 10 seconds. If the water is still sizzling after 10 seconds you need a little more heat in the stone, as we are looking for the searing heat, not simply boiling.
